How to Calculate Drywall Sheets, Screws, Mud, and Tape
Drywall is cheap per sheet but expensive to come back for. Twenty sheets short on a Saturday means a Monday hardware-store run, a stalled crew, and a day of lost framing work. Here's how pros count sheets, screws, joint compound, and tape in one pass.
The core formulas
Drywall math has two inputs — total square feet to cover, and sheet coverage.
- 4 ft × 8 ft sheet = 32 sq ft
- 4 ft × 10 ft sheet = 40 sq ft
- 4 ft × 12 ft sheet = 48 sq ft
- 4 ft × 14 ft sheet = 56 sq ft (special order, long walls only)
Bigger sheets = fewer seams = less taping. Pros use 12 ft sheets whenever they fit through the door.
Step-by-step estimation
Calculate wall square footage
Measure the perimeter of the room (sum of all wall lengths) and multiply by ceiling height.
Example: a 12 ft × 15 ft bedroom with 8 ft ceilings. Perimeter = 12 + 15 + 12 + 15 = 54 ft. Wall area = 54 × 8 = 432 sq ft.
Add ceiling square footage (if drywalling the ceiling)
Ceiling = length × width. For the same bedroom: 12 × 15 = 180 sq ft of ceiling.
Total: 432 + 180 = 612 sq ft of drywall area.
Subtract large openings (optional)
For bids and tight budgets, subtract openings 16 sq ft or larger:
- Standard interior door (3 ft × 7 ft): 21 sq ft — subtract
- Double door (6 ft × 7 ft): 42 sq ft — subtract
- Sliding glass door (6 ft × 7 ft): 42 sq ft — subtract
- Standard window (3 ft × 5 ft): 15 sq ft — skip, the cutoff isn't usable
- Picture window (6 ft × 5 ft): 30 sq ft — subtract
For quick residential estimates, many pros skip the subtraction entirely — the 10% waste factor absorbs small openings.
Divide by sheet coverage and add waste
For the 612 sq ft example using 4×8 sheets (32 sq ft each):
612 ÷ 32 = 19.1 sheets. Add 10% waste: 19.1 × 1.10 = 21 sheets.
Using 4×12 sheets (48 sq ft each):
612 ÷ 48 = 12.75 sheets. Add 10% waste: 12.75 × 1.10 = 14 sheets of 4×12.
Same room, half the sheet count — and far fewer butt joints to tape.
Count screws, mud, tape, and corner bead
Drywall screws
- 4 × 8 sheet: ~32 screws (12" OC on studs, 16" OC on ceiling joists)
- 4 × 12 sheet: ~40 screws
1 lb of 1-1/4" coarse drywall screws = ~320 screws. For 14 sheets of 4×12 (560 screws), plan 2 lb of screws.
Use 1-1/4" for 1/2" drywall on wood studs, 1-5/8" for 5/8" drywall, and fine-thread screws for metal studs.
Joint compound (mud)
Standard 3-coat finish uses roughly 1.5 gallons per 100 sq ft of drywall. That's tape coat + two finish coats.
For 612 sq ft: 612 ÷ 100 × 1.5 = 9.2 gallons. Buy 2 five-gallon buckets of all-purpose compound (10 gal total).
Level 5 (skim coat) adds another 0.5 gal per 100 sq ft.
Drywall tape
Plan 370 linear feet of tape per 1,000 sq ft of drywall. For 612 sq ft: ~230 lf of tape. Paper tape comes in 500 ft rolls — 1 roll is plenty.
Fiberglass mesh tape is faster for seams but only works under setting-type compound (hot mud) for Level 4+ finishes.
Corner bead
Measure every outside corner in the room from floor to ceiling. A single outside corner in an 8 ft ceiling room = 8 lf of corner bead. Corner bead comes in 8 ft and 10 ft sticks.
Choosing drywall type and thickness
- 1/2" regular: standard for walls and ceilings on 16" OC framing
- 5/8" Type X: fire-rated, required on garage ceilings adjacent to living space and in some multi-family assemblies (check code)
- 1/2" mold/moisture resistant (greenboard / purple board): bathrooms, laundry, basements
- Cement backer board: behind tile in wet areas (showers, tub surrounds) — NOT drywall, calculated the same way
- 1/4" flexible: curved walls and arches only
Common mistakes
- Subtracting every small window and light fixture. Time-wasting on small openings — the cutoffs aren't reusable. Skip anything under 16 sq ft and let the waste factor absorb it.
- Using 4×8 sheets in rooms that fit 4×12. Twice as many butt joints to tape and sand. Only default to 4×8 if doorways, stairs, or attic access prevent longer sheets.
- Under-buying joint compound. 1 gallon per 100 sq ft is a 2-coat estimate, not 3. For a painted finish you need 1.5 gal per 100 sq ft minimum.
- Forgetting corner bead. Every outside corner needs it. Estimators routinely forget closet corners and pass-through openings.
- Skipping Type X where code requires it. Garage ceilings and firewall assemblies fail inspection with regular 1/2" drywall. Always verify fire-rating requirements before ordering.
